Mateixes Mancances

Mateixes Mancances (2018) is an artistic collective formed by Berta Vallvé and Leia Goiria. From our common education, we adopt textiles to support reflection around the concepts of gender - space and on the way in which women vacate space in art.
The gender perspective is a common thread that accompanies the content and the work methodology centered on consent, the ethics of cures, the feminization of the spaces we intervene and collective work. It has been fundamental to discover the feminist critiques of the History of Art and to see the need to recognize as equals those practices considered minor arts due to their connection with domesticity and femininity. The project that we develop in La Escocesa starts from the need to recognize the textile legacy and how its practices depend, at a great extent, on the generational altruistic teaching by women, becoming great transmitters of experiential and cultural heritages.
estudi comunitari is a project started on March investigating together about the genealogy of textile artists in a semi-exhibitive format by the name of [estudi comunitari dins sala expositiva] at the Guinardó Center. As it was restored by the confinement, the format was configured to have an online continuity, in the web estudicomunitari.hotglue.me
After the wide range of research that has been carried out in a decentralized way during the confinement, we are currently focusing on building an artistic space and face-to-face reflection on art and textile techniques that have been widely recognized or not in the history of patriarchal art.
The proposal is based on the creation of a processual community installation, which aims to (re)know the artistic legacy of women and their genealogy in the textile field from a feminist perspective. Through this action, we propose to originate an alternative process in museum entities that revalue the feminine textile artistic creation.
With the aim of sharing discourses and experiential knowledge in the field of textile art, we plan to create three encounters with different profiles of significant women in the artistic heritage of textile as well as others participants with a more theoretical approach. These encounters will take place in a performative installation, that is halfway between daily basis and art, in which the same participants will take part, providing both manual and oral contributions. The intention is to coexist, build and interact with this space as an axis to recognize the textile practices that will shape it.
We understand that the creation processes are an essential part of the artistic projects and we want to make them visible at the same time that we bet on horizontal methodologies in order to destabilize the
imposed hierarchies between the categories artist-public and creation-research.
We conceive the project as a space of production and, at the same time, for reflection, making coexist artistic creation and generation of contents in the same space. The proposal is based on the “situated knowledge” and claims the relevance of popular, collective and personal experiences as valid sources of knowledge. This will be a shared process with various people involved in the textile art and in the recognition of textile heritage as artistic practices and will use their interventions to configure an environment that represents the textile arts in a dignified way.
