ceramics workshop with urban soils

Pottery workshop to learn how to work with the materials of our environment: from the extraction of the earth and the collection of the materials to the elaboration of pieces and how to fire them. This workshop aims to stimulate experimental and creative practices not only to learn to work in a local and sustainable way but also to connect with the environment around them.

programme:

July 11th from 17h to 20h

On the first day of the workshop we will go to look for soil and waste from the plots around the Escocesa and we will talk about the types of soil and its different qualities and the influence of this when making ceramics. Once we have the soil, we will learn how to prepare it to extract the clay.

July 18th from 17h to 20h

On the second day, we will experiment with the clay and the materials collected to mould pieces. We will make pieces and give them different finishes.

July 25th from 17h to 21h

The third day will be to move forward with the projects that each one of us has. The pieces will be baked in the Scottish kiln at low temperature and there will be a last session in September for those who want to glaze the pieces.

Workshop by Maria Roy Deulofeu (Barcelona, 1993) artist who uses critical design, along with traditional and experimental craft techniques to explore new narratives to move away from a culture of exploitation and abuse of the environment to one that proposes opportunities to relate in an egalitarian and immersive way to species and the environment. Her main subject of study is the earth, as living matter that speaks of history, politics and ecology, and she works with the material remains she encounters to make ceramic sculptures. She graduated in 2016 in Arts and Design at the Escola Massana in Barcelona and in 2020 she finished the Master in Design and Research "Material Futures" at Central Saint Martins in London. The final project of her master Hollow Earth, has been exhibited in different countries including the "Dutch Design Week" (Holland, 2021) and the Whitechapel Gallery in London during the exhibition "The London Open 2022". Maria is currently teaching at the Arts and Design Degree at the Escola Massana and shares her knowledge of ceramics at La Escocesa. She also teaches ceramics workshops with the aim of linking the community to its environment and resources.
