We continue with Casal d'Estiu of La Escocesa with the pottery workshop. Throughout 4 sessions we will model botijos with recycled clay and local earth.
These will be practical sessions where apart from working with our hands we will try to document, rethink and recover the technology of the traditional “botijos” to store, maintain and refresh liquids.
Tuesday July 8th from 17:30 to 20h
What is a “càntir”? how does it work? what types are there? what is it made of? what is the clay? where is it found? how to identify the clay, types of clay needed to make the “càntirs”.
Introduction to the two modeling techniques we are going to use: churro and pinch technique to start the “càntirs”.
Tuesday July 15 from 17:30 to 20h
This session will be dedicated to the modeling of the “càntirs”.
Tuesday July 22nd from 17:30 to 20h
This session will be dedicated to the modeling of the “càntirs” and we will see different decorative techniques that we can apply.
Tuesday July 29th from 17:30h to 20h
We will prepare glazes from pigments and oxides to apply in some parts of the botijos only decoratively to avoid losing the porosity of the “càntir”.
Maria Roy is an artist and ceramist who works with both traditional and experimental craft techniques to explore, understand and assimilate the world around her. Her main area of study is the earth, understood as a living material that narrates the history, politics and ecology of its environment. Her works translate the very materiality offered by the soil, creating sculptures that reflect the local geographies in which they are developed.
Investigating ceramics as an archaeological medium, Maria aims to recover narratives that connect us to our environment through objects and their materialities. She graduated in Arts and Design at the Escola Massana and subsequently studied a Masters in Material Futures at Central Saint Martins. Her graduation project, Hollow Earth, has been exhibited on several occasions, including The London Open at the Whitechapel Gallery.
With a practice rooted in pedagogy, Maria runs ceramic workshops on an ongoing basis, teaching, learning and collaborating with local communities to explore their connection to the land. She has also developed these workshops with institutions such as the Miró Foundation, the Jan Van Eyck Academy and Elisava. Recently, she has been teaching the projects subject of the Degree in Arts and Design at the Massana School and is currently sharing her experience with the local communities.
