In this series of workshops, we’ll explore concepts and phenomena related to rhythm, noise, and resonance through hands-on, collaborative experimentation. Using our bodies and DIY technology, we’ll delve into the fields of sound waves and electrical currents, developing our own dynamics and tools for communication and expression.

The workshop will be led by Opoku from Jokkoo, with contributions from Noela Covelo Velasco and the Jokkoo Collective.

bio

Oscar Taylor (Opoku) is a multidisciplinary artist, composer, and educator who works with sound, noise, and DIY technology, focusing on improvisation, experimentation, and collaboration. He has composed for film, dance, and audiovisual installations, exploring the interaction between popular and experimental music, spatial audio, and collaborative field recording. Through study, play, and collective creation, Oscar hopes we can deconstruct hierarchies and dichotomies and develop our practices of care and communication. He is a member of the Barcelona-based Jokkoo collective, and his influences stem from science fiction, jazz, and gastronomy.

Noela Covelo Velasco. Pontevedra, 1994. Her practice explores the voice as both material and space, taking shape through sound composition, performances, and collective processes. She is interested in the potential of the collective voice as a space for political imagination. She is part of the Foc space and co-founder of c h o r o, a space for pedagogical experimentation based at Foc, where she curates programs and collaborates with other artists. She holds a Master’s degree in Sound Art (2020–2022) from the University of Barcelona (UB) and a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design (2012–2016) from ESDi.

Jokkoo Collective is an artistic and musical collective based in Barcelona, born out of the intention and need to research and disseminate the most contemporary and futuristic creations within the experimental and alternative scene of the African continent, its diaspora, and its kindred communities around the world. Through their work, they forge connections and create spaces that serve as a platform for dissident aesthetics and narratives.

Rhythm, Noise, and Resonance is part of REBOST, a program initiative managed autonomously and collectively by the members of La Escocesa, who decide which activities to organize based on the group’s interests and needs.
