flash ceramics course using clay from the site

with Maria Roy

This course is designed to provide an introduction to ceramics using local clays, helping participants begin to identify different types of clay and their uses in ceramic practice. We will take advantage of the excavations at the site formerly known as La Escocesa to collect the various clays unearthed there and work directly with these materials.

The sessions will be primarily hands-on, with a brief technical and theoretical introduction to contextualize the processes. The last two sessions will focus on creating pieces using the collected clays and materials, reflecting the lived experience and the site’s inherent materiality, with an emphasis on the relationship between the territory, the material, and the practice of ceramics.

program

session 1

tuesday 19th from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

During the first session, we’ll go out to the site to collect clay; we’ll return to La Escocesa to process the material and turn it into a paste suitable for modeling.

session 2

wednesday 20th from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m

In the second session, we will continue preparing the clay and begin modeling pieces, introducing techniques for modeling with a clay roller and a board.

session 3

thursday 21st from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m

The final session will be dedicated to modeling and decorative techniques using the other materials we collected.

bios

Maria Roy is an artist and ceramist who works with both traditional and experimental craft techniques to explore, understand, and assimilate the world around her. Her main area of study is earth, understood as a living material that narrates the history, politics, and ecology of its environment. Her works translate the very materiality offered by the soil, creating sculptures that reflect the local geographies in which they are developed.

Investigating ceramics as an archaeological medium, Maria aims to recover narratives that connect us to our environment through objects and their materialities. With a practice rooted in pedagogy, Maria regularly teaches ceramics workshops, teaching, learning, and collaborating with local communities to explore their connection to the land.
