ceramic candleholder flash course

with Maria Roy

Over three sessions we will delve into the world of high-temperature clay modelling with the aim of creating candelabras.

Together we will see some examples: from the most curious to the most traditional, with the intention that each of us can experiment and play with the plasticity of clay and its creative power.

The last session will be dedicated to glazes and we will learn how to give colour and texture to our pieces.

programme

session 1

Monday 2nd of June
17:30h - 20h

This first session will serve as an introduction to both examples of candlesticks from ethnological archives and the basic modelling techniques: iron, churro and solid modelling. We will finish the session by starting to model our candlesticks.

session 2

Thursday 5th of June
17:30h - 20h

During this session we will continue modelling the candlesticks and introduce decorative techniques to finish them.

session 3

Thursday 12th of June
17:30h - 20h

During the last session, we will prepare glazes from pigments and oxides to apply to the candlesticks to give them an extra layer that not only gives them colour and texture, but also protects and waterproofs them.

bios

Maria Roy is an artist and ceramist who works with both traditional and experimental craft techniques to explore, understand and assimilate the world around her. Her main area of study is the earth, understood as a living material that narrates the history, politics and ecology of its environment. Her works translate the very materiality offered by the soil, creating sculptures that reflect the local geographies in which they are developed.

Investigating ceramics as an archaeological medium, Maria aims to recover narratives that connect us to our environment through objects and their materialities. She graduated in Arts and Design at the Escola Massana and subsequently studied a Masters in Material Futures at Central Saint Martins. Her graduation project, Hollow Earth, has been exhibited on several occasions, including The London Open at the Whitechapel Gallery.

With a practice rooted in pedagogy, Maria runs ceramic workshops on an ongoing basis, teaching, learning and collaborating with local communities to explore their connection to the land. She has also developed these workshops with institutions such as the Miró Foundation, the Jan Van Eyck Academy and Elisava. Recently, she has been teaching the projects subject of the Degree in Arts and Design at the Massana School and is currently sharing her experience with the local communities.
