the birdhouse club

(and other creatures)

The birdhouse club is a space to reflect and experiment creatively on ways to cohabit with different species of urban birds and other critters. Broadening our gaze towards the species with which we coexist and doing it collectively generates, as Len Howard used to say, a cooler world.

During 5 sessions and through different texts and outings, we will explore how we affect other non-human subjects in order to speculate on how we want to collaborate with them.

The meetings will alternate snacks and outings in order to generate different environments for the proposed creative practices. The idea is to create a group of affinity and continuity, the sessions are prepared to recover themes dealt with in previous sessions and expand discussions, so by joining the club, you commit to attend all five sessions. It's okay if you miss any of them, but the idea is to generate a continuity group.

program

session 1: The field diary

Tuesday October 1st from 18h to 20:30h

Presentation of the theoretical themes that guide the research: the ontological turn and multispecies ethnographies. We will also think about the generation of the field diary and we will talk about other groups of aviaries around the world.

session 2: Observation and listening: Becoming Other

Saturday October 5th from 9 to 12h

First outing outside La Escocesa.
Through different proposals, we will try to make a non-scientific approach to the environment, expanding the ways of creative approach for the interspecies encounter.

session 3: Continuing with the problem: new collaborations

Tuesday October 8th from 18h to 20:30h

We will map different multispecies creative practices. What are artists doing? We will discuss how to generate objects for multispecies collaboration. On a more practical level we will prepare bird food balls.

session 4: Observation and Listening: Becoming Other

Sunday October 13th from 9 to 12h

Second outing outside La Escocesa.
Through different proposals, we will try to make a non-scientific approach to the environment, expanding the ways of creative approach for the interspecies encounter.

session 5: Final reflections: towards a convivial future

Tuesday October 15th from 18h to 20:30h

Sharing of the field diaries that we have carried out during these days. How has our vision been broadened? We will end with a closing dynamic to speculate on desirable futures and affections.

bio

Elena Maravillas is a multidisciplinary artist trained in the field of cultural and literary studies. Her practice explores communication and the construction of links between the human and the beyond-the-human, creating bridges of connection and understanding between subjects and communities and exploring ways to generate other ways of inhabiting the world. Film production appears as a tool that allows him to look at and from other places, drinking from the tradition of ethnographic and documentary cinema.

The birdhouse club is part of REBOST, a program line managed autonomously and collectively by the members of La Escocesa, who decide the activities they want to organize according to the interests and needs of the group.
