between pink and blue

workshop with Christian Fernández Mirón

Between pink and blue (Entre el rosa y la azul) is an introductory workshop on gender and diversity in childhood, family, and school, designed for people who raise children, educate them, or are interested in these topics. We will delve into some key—though not necessarily obvious—ideas about gender (roles, games and toys, identity, orientation, expression, language, representation, performativity). We will understand gender in its most plural dimension, as something that cuts across all people, from the most normative (the most feminine girl or the most masculine boy) to the most dissident or fluid, and which places us in this world where we coexist with our differences.

Gender is in everything, and everything is at stake. But we lack the tools and references to raise and educate ourselves in diversity, spaces where we can talk and ask questions without fear, where we can share our similarities and differences, and even celebrate them. Gender is one of the most characteristic and fascinating concepts of the human race, present in different ways in all cultures, eras, and territories. How can we approach it today with the aim of providing a better future for those who are yet to come?

The activity will include theoretical, practical, and recreational elements. It will be conducted in Spanish, is aimed at adults, and a childcare/playroom will be provided for children during the activity, coordinated by Sarai G. Cumplido.

Christian Fernández Mirón (he/him) works on a variety of projects spanning art and education, culture and social issues. He develops workshops on gender and diversity in childhood, adolescence, family, and school under the title Entre el rosa y la azul (Between Pink and Blue). He has published a parenting diary about being an adoptive and queer (p)arent: 7 años de espera, 24 horas de aviso, 7 días de vida (7 Years of Waiting, 24 Hours' Notice, 7 Days of Life) (in collaboration with La Escocesa, second edition available soon!). Among his community projects, his work with older LGTBIQ+ people through Libérate: artes escénicas y mediación cultural (culminating in a cabaret starring the participants and based on their biographies) stands out. Christian is the only cis male author in the new volume of Continta me tienes, (h)amor co(m)adre, about aternities and non-traditional parenting, as is also the case with adoption.

Sarai G. Cumplido is an artist and educator, and a member of the DU-DA collective. Her practice focuses on non-formal education and working with children through free/liberatory pedagogies. Her experience with children is reflected in initiatives such as Menjador Nòmada (2018–2022), a project centered on communal living, food, and community life in public space; Escuela del Más Acá (2023–2025), a space for learning and play that approaches death with curiosity from a non–adult-centered perspective; and summer camps in Mieras, where she works through play, creation, and everyday life in rural contexts.
