An area with low visual and auditory stimulation, with furniture for horizontal rest, dim lighting, steaming toys, and a sensory disconnection teepee.
At La Escocesa, in our desire to embrace and enjoy diverse realities and bodies—non-bipedal, non-normative, sick, or disabled—we propose to intervene in architectural barriers and other forms of ableist impediments for Open Workshops for people with disabilities.
As disabled people who inhabit and build this space, we encounter ableist reality on a daily basis, which systematically excludes us from public and private activities in the cultural and social sphere by failing to respond to our needs.
This proposal includes creating a horizontal space to be in the place in other ways, furniture with preferential use, audio descriptions that bring non-accessible spaces closer, guided tours for disabled people, and specific signage.
Where to find it?
During the Open Studios, personal assistants will be available to help those who request it in advance (transcription service, assistance with moving around the space, accompanying participants to the bathroom, and assistance with eating).
You can also bring your own personal assistant from home. To do so, we offer a grant. To apply, please contact gerencia@laescocesa.org
What is a PA?
Personal assistance (PA) is a support service that enables people with functional diversity to perform everyday tasks that they cannot do on their own, with the aim of promoting their autonomy and social participation. The personal assistant works directly with the user, following their instructions and respecting their decisions.
